# HORSE SIGNS REPOSITORY SEED **Version:** 2026-09-18 **Function:** one-file bootloader, source router, epistemic firewall, and continuation handoff for the Bartlett / *Horse Signs* sandbox. **Status:** this file is not a replacement manuscript and is not a lore dump. It stores the smallest causal graph, authority rules, and retrieval routes from which a fresh model can regrow the live system. > **Repository joke accepted.** The repository is one file because the useful object is not a warehouse of facts. It is a function that restores the right constraints, reads the right raw scene, and then lets local inference run. --- ## 0. How to use this file Do **not** answer from this seed alone when the request concerns an existing scene. Use it to choose the smallest authoritative source slice, read that slice, compile per-character state, and only then reason or write. ### State labels - **`[TEXT]`** — exists in a written scene. - **`[FIXED]`** — current continuity required by a later correction, whether or not rendered. - **`[CALL]`** — a reversible choice currently used by the sandbox. - **`[PROPOSED]`** — discussed measurement point or connective tissue; not yet written/canonized. - **`[OPEN]`** — deliberately unresolved. - **`[SUPERSEDED]`** — historically useful branch which must not be loaded as current state. - **`[INFERENCE]`** — locally strong deduction, not character knowledge unless an information path exists. ### Authority order When sources disagree, use: 1. the latest explicit user correction; 2. `HORSE_SIGNS_TIMELINE_PATCH_2026-09-17.md` and the calendar at the foot of `horse signs novella.md`; 3. the state handoff nearest the requested scene; 4. the actual scene text; 5. older seeds and exploratory threads; 6. model-generated connective tissue. Never silently promote `[PROPOSED]`, `[OPEN]`, or a patchable invention into `[FIXED]`. ### Boot function ```text REHYDRATE(request, time, pov): 1. Resolve the date and nearest written boundary. 2. Read the exact source slice named in §2. 3. Compile body/task/attention for every present person. 4. Compile one knowledge ledger per person; never use global story state as POV state. 5. Load relationship-specific permissions, prohibitions, habits, and stale assumptions. 6. Mark every proposed bridge as PROPOSED; preserve OPEN terms. 7. Generate the next local action before explaining it. 8. Render through one camera. Hidden threads may cause visible events but may not narrate themselves. 9. Run the failure checks in §8. 10. Stop after one meaningful state change unless the user asks for more. ``` The governing test is not “does this fit the theme?” It is “could this body, with this information, attention, history, and task, do this next?” --- ## 1. Engine in compact form This is not generic boarding-school romance. It is a collision among several independently functioning systems: ```text post-Soviet political churn -> increased value and operational load of Siger's Anglo-Russian child asset -> school absences, bodily residue, incomplete debriefs, Corvid/Baltic pressure Siger's conditioning + Sherlock's ADHD/CPTSD/body state -> state-dependent competence, accommodation, opsec, aggression, leakage, forgetting Henry's ordinary social confidence + procedural propriety + horse-welfare training -> Contact Initiative -> the Thing -> Horse Signs Arthur's political/intelligence work with Siger -> sophisticated operational model of Sherlock -> professional use of the boy -> enormous blind spot concerning Henry's private connection to him two teenagers' private secrecy -> adults possess more classified context but less local truth -> delayed Arthur realization becomes increasingly catastrophic and funny ``` The adults' classified context is **not** knowledge of the Thing. Neither Arthur nor Siger acquires the boys' private connection without an actual information path. The durable invariant: > Preserve who can know what, what each body is doing, what each person can call the experience, and the order in which those facts become available. Then let each idiot act locally. Comedy, danger, appetite, panic, cruelty, competence, affection, vanity, and spite are allowed to occupy the **same action**. Never sort them into alternating modes. --- ## 2. Source router: retrieve, do not ingest indiscriminately All paths below are relative to this file's directory. | Need | Read | What it supplies / warning | |---|---|---| | January 2000 office + fence | `henry_bartlett_ scrap.md` | Original scrap. Arthur reads the old report; Siger performs the sales meeting; Henry meets Siger and Sherlock; fence/cigarettes; Arthur later orders distance. Treat the prose as toy/scrap, not polished canon. | | Why January exists | `bartlett scrap explanation ramble.txt` | Author-side causal graph: wrist break, Holland House collection, Arthur/Siger roles, Tel Aviv report, Putin-transition sales logic, Mycroft asymmetry. | | Tel Aviv / old report expansion | `bartlett scrap report details expansion thread.txt` | What different institutional layers know about captured ten-year-old Sherlock. Use for Arthur's threat update; do not dump it into Henry. | | Thing architecture | `bartlett scrap the Thing expansion thread seed state.txt`, especially opening Sherlock/Henry sections | Avoidance -> Contact Initiative -> Micah question -> Thing. **Warning:** its later Henry->Arthur->Olivia disclosure branch is superseded. | | Current chronology | `HORSE_SIGNS_TIMELINE_PATCH_2026-09-17.md` and `horse signs novella.md`, `## Calendar` | Authoritative Summer Half dates, small-holes/one-crater absence ecology, Baltic residue, Corvid sequence, and superseded Olivia branch. | | Written May novella | `horse signs novella.md` | Chapters 0, 0½, 1–4 plus local state handoffs. Always read the exact chapter before continuing or diagnosing it. | | Anti-flattening | `KEEP_THE_TEETH__LABRADOR_CRYPTID_COLLISION_MANUAL.md` | The bite is a chord; Henry's revelation stays small; Sherlock keeps spite; comedy and grit remain simultaneous. | | Holland House social field | `bartlett scrap henry thing holland house codex and scenes.md` | Cohort graph, Seth's wrong theories, smoking-alley/fork material, Thing fragments. Some headings say Michaelmas 2000; use the timeline patch for current dates. | | Olivia / room simulation and older event mechanics | `fun story thread excerpt to explain the nonsense.txt`; `rehydration seed for fun story thread.txt` | Multithreaded room logic and a scene-specific seed. **Warning:** “Olivia already knows” is a fossil for a later branch, not current May state. | | General rendering runtime | `gpt-5.6 writing skill regression saga/narrative_runtime_preflight.pseudo` | Silent compiler for body, knowledge provenance, relationship edges, and local next beats. | | Method, not canon | `gpt-5.6 writing skill regression saga/running-the-writing-machine.md` | Run the machine, do not read the gauge. Use as process guidance, never as a beat recipe. | | What is masonry vs scaffolding | `LOAD_BEARING_ABSURDITIES_2026-09-17.md` | Causal ownership, reindexing, dialogue as actuator, fossils, and replaceable surface objects. | ### Minimal retrieval recipes - **Continue after Chapter 4:** read `horse signs novella.md` from `## 3. Report` through `## State carried out of Chapter 4`, then the calendar, then this file §§4–7. - **Write/inspect January:** read all of `bartlett scrap explanation ramble.txt`, then the relevant passage of `henry_bartlett_ scrap.md` from Arthur opening the report through the departure. - **Write Henry POV:** read the nearest Henry chapter plus `KEEP_THE_TEETH...` §§3, 4, and 7. Do not substitute the global causal graph for Henry's available evidence. - **Write Sherlock POV:** read Chapter 0 or 3 plus the closest older Sherlock source requested. Preserve task, body, ADHD state, opsec, and spite simultaneously. - **Develop an unwritten bridge:** read the two scenes on either side, list `[FIXED] / [OPEN] / [PROPOSED]`, then solve only the gating terms. --- ## 3. Generative character functions These are not personality summaries. They are high-yield functions which regenerate local behaviour. ### Sherlock Holmes, fifteen ```text inputs: task + incomplete instructions + body state + attention capture + relationship-specific permissions + operational secrecy outputs: exact competence in trained channels + ordinary adolescent error/impulse elsewhere + spite, refusal, aggression, appetite, and bad lies + state-dependent leaks when training cost drops ``` - `[FIXED]` Born 6 January 1985; begins Eton September 1997 unusually young. - `[FIXED]` Operationally used by Siger since childhood; training is imposed architecture, not total personality. - `[FIXED]` Severe untreated ADHD plus developmental trauma: attention, inhibition, episodic encoding, and disclosure vary sharply with sleep, load, nicotine, pain, safety, and endorphin state. - `[FIXED]` “Trained spy” does **not** mean perfect silence. Half-asleep, privately safe, physiologically flooded Sherlock may ramble and may not remember doing so. Intentional reporting remains strongly compartmented. - `[FIXED]` Competence is state- and channel-specific. Do not promote him into an omniscient adult Sherlock basin. - `[FIXED]` He can refuse, initiate, leave, be foul, and choose. Accommodation toward Henry is interesting because it coexists with these. - `[FIXED]` He does not require an ordinary “what does this relationship mean?” variable. Attraction and local preference still affect attention and behaviour. - `[FIXED]` He omits Henry from ordinary reporting. Whether a particular omission is internally framed as protection, opsec, avoidance, or simply non-reporting must be solved from the local state rather than supplied globally. ### Henry Bartlett, fifteen ```text inputs: visible condition + social/procedural problem + propriety + huge ordinary confidence + horse-trained welfare classifier outputs: an action, rule, speech, or initiative often locally useful, partially wrong, and gloriously overengineered ``` - `[FIXED]` Future statesman in larval Labrador form: socially secure, sporty, horse-mad, likeable across incompatible peer groups, procedurally minded. - `[FIXED]` His baseline empathy uses substitution: “what would this be like if it happened to me?” Sherlock increasingly breaks that tool. - `[FIXED]` He can obey Arthur verbally and then disobey without rebellion theatre. “Yes, sir” may chiefly terminate an insufferable car conversation. - `[FIXED]` He creates a private Continued Contact / Contact Initiative after January. Exact internal title is patchable; nobody else knows it. - `[FIXED]` Horse Signs reads **condition, not content**. It can detect hunger, gait, tension, sleep, startle, hands, weight, and history-shaped responses. It cannot read classified events or relationship meaning. - `[FIXED]` His discoveries remain Henry-sized. The bite/noise insight produces juvenile vanity as well as concern; do not upgrade him into a therapist or reciprocity theorist. - `[FIXED]` He has not told Arthur about the Thing and wants no inquiry into why Arthur's stay-away assessment was privately discarded. ### Siger Holmes ```text inputs: moving opportunity field + people worth enjoying/using + old networks + professional objective + appetite for mischief outputs: frictionless social access + excellent contingency surfing + real attachment/logistical care + morally appalling action without ordinary recoil ``` - `[FIXED]` Bicultural Anglo-Russian aristocrat; former Soviet foreign-intelligence officer turned long-term SIS double; old Vasily/Violet/SIS/KGB networks remain active context. - `[FIXED]` Genuinely excellent command officer for adult professionals and simultaneously disastrous father/handler of Sherlock. Do not collapse either truth. - `[FIXED]` Preternaturally likeable. Charm is not a fake mask over the “real monster.” He can sincerely enjoy, attend to, remember, amuse, and attract people who know what he does. - `[FIXED]` He survived more than a decade as an MI6–KGB double partly because even informed people keep liking and using him. Arthur is closest to dislike and remains caught in the field. - `[FIXED]` Sherlock is both a very expensive bespoke asset and genuinely beloved in Siger's own architecture. Siger does not knowingly waste him or deliberately place him in an unpriced line of fire. - `[FIXED]` He knows Sherlock's familiar distress patterns. An incensed Sherlock ramble need not teach him that the dog is upset or produce an explicit “I care.” He may listen, price it in, permit venting, mock-pat, and get bored. - `[FIXED]` Do not make every charming conversation an operation. The industrial magnet remains magnetic when merely bored. ### Arthur Bartlett ```text inputs: political objective + Siger-shaped operational resource + genuine moral alarm + appetite for usable results + absolute partition around Henry outputs: sophisticated tasking/containment + continuing complicity + hilariously compromised paternal boundary ``` - `[FIXED]` Political/intelligence liaison-fixer, long-term Siger whisperer, and mentor-ish figure to Mycroft. - `[FIXED]` January is a sales meeting as well as a threat update. Arthur is not a clean outsider: after being horrified by the old report, he spends the following months intermittently ordering, tasking, or receiving work involving Sherlock through Siger. - `[FIXED]` Arthur knows the operational animal far better than Henry does. He still lacks the private fact most relevant to his own son. - `[FIXED]` His boundary is not “children must never be used.” It is much closer to “the terrible apparatus may operate but may not eat my son.” - `[FIXED]` Henry does **not** know Arthur's tasking history. Arthur's complicity is backstage dramatic irony, never Henry's unexplained inference. - `[FIXED]` Arthur owns his own tasking history, but that fact is not automatically salient in every scene and does not let him infer the Thing. Current accessibility still depends on what he is attending to and what evidence is present. ### Olivia Bartlett - `[FIXED]` High-resolution social observer with fifteen years of Henry data; curious, funny, and not reducible to generic maternal intuition. - `[FIXED]` She does not like horses. On 13 May she contributes only **colt**, as a dick joke/observation after noticing Henry is keen. Henry supplies the Pony Club corpus. - `[FIXED]` She does **not** know the Thing in the current state. Recognizing interest is not knowing extent, frequency, or mechanics. - `[FIXED]` Do not back-propagate Henry's Horse Signs framework into her mouth. ### Mycroft Holmes - `[FIXED]` Born 1977/78; recently out of Cambridge and entering intelligence work during Y2K/Putin transition. - `[FIXED]` Does not know the true extent of Sherlock's operational use. Sherlock assumes he knows and the family simply does not discuss vulgar matters. Siger knows Mycroft does not know. Arthur mistakenly treats disclosure to Mycroft as meaningful leverage. - `[FIXED]` Do not grant him omniscience merely because he is Mycroft. --- ## 4. Timeline: only the load-bearing order ### School years before the novella | Date | State transition | |---|---| | **Sep 1997** | `[FIXED]` Sherlock enters Eton at 12; most peers are already 13. First year begins. | | **Lent 1998, approximate** | `[PROPOSED]` Henry accidentally witnesses an incomplete Micah Allen scene. At thirteen he does not parse its full implications; attraction/preoccupation produces fluster and then avoidance. Sherlock mirrors the avoidance because he assumes he caused the problem. | | **Summer 1998** | `[CALL]` Micah leaves for Cambridge. Loss of patronage/scaffold contributes to bullying, slipping marks, and load. | | **1998–99** | `[FIXED]` Full mutual avoidance campaign. Seth's spy rumours and bullying continue. | | **1999** | `[FIXED]` Sherlock's marks slip under ADHD, Micah loss, bullying, and operational load; Siger's threat and nicotine produce the smoking/marks chain. | | **Christmas 1999** | `[FIXED]` Siger engineers the £10/cigarette trap and breaks Sherlock's left wrist, closing the violin escape route and pushing him back into Holland House collection. | ### January through May 2000 | Date | State transition / location | |---|---| | **early Jan** | `[TEXT]` Holmes-estate office and fence in `henry_bartlett_ scrap.md`. Arthur requests evidence; Siger displays the old operation/report and the current asset. Henry and Sherlock discover enough at the fence to perturb their avoidance equilibrium. | | **car afterward** | `[FIXED]` Arthur orders Henry to stay away from Holmes. Henry agrees, sincerely inhabits the reasoning for perhaps five minutes, then later decides Arthur lacks privileged local information. | | **Lent Half** | `[PROPOSED]` Henry creates a Proposal/Campaign of Continued Interaction and delivers an overprepared speech. Sherlock may not let him finish: stare -> silence -> leave is more likely than adult strategic dialogue. Contact nevertheless becomes ordinary through repetition. | | **~mid-March** | `[FIXED]` Henry eventually asks about the old Micah fragment. Sherlock offers a direct practical answer; Henry initially refuses, later reverses. The Thing begins. No New Relationship Phase is required. | | **late Mar–late Apr** | `[FIXED]` Easter interval. Henry declares the Thing over; it resumes after Summer Half opens. | | **6–10 May** | `[FIXED]` Baltic: one long absence. Quick capture, left hand crushed under a boot, escape, four days' evasion, Siger collection, immediate return to school. Exact country/objective/captors remain open unless the working proposal in §7 is adopted. | | **Wed 10 May** | `[TEXT]` Chapters 0 and 0½. Return, coat, taped hand, foulness; evening Face/Thing/bite/giggle/collapse. Same event, two cameras, incomplete in different ways. | | **11 May onward** | `[CALL]` Pattygate: bite mark not concealed; Sherlock performs recreational counterintelligence around his own teeth. House settles on Patty Smith, making later Davies claims less credible. | | **Sat 13 May** | `[FIXED/PARTLY RENDERED]` Parents' afternoon. Olivia notices Henry is keen and calls Sherlock colt-like. It is a dick joke. Olivia does not know the Thing. | | **~17 May** | `[FIXED]` Henry's internal Pony Club manual comes online. | | **Thu 18 May** | `[TEXT]` Chapter 1, two-night absence, Baltic residue, Horse Signs maiden voyage. | | **21–26 May** | `[TEXT/CALL]` Sleep-like-a-lamp closing movement; smoking-alley material; Seth broadcasts wrong theory; nobody believes him. | | **Sat 27 May** | `[TEXT]` Corvid dead-drop leg. A shot from the Corvid premises would have intersected Sherlock's original walking line; a small observation-induced pause saves him. He reconstructs later and reports. | | **Sun 28–Mon 29 May** | `[TEXT]` Fork, Chapters 2–4, ballistics report, Sallust, history-not-temperament, Henry-safe freeze release. Current written handoff. | | **Sat 3 June, candidate event date** | `[PROPOSED TEST FIXTURE]` A possible Fourth of June parent/alumni scene described in §7. Neither date nor staging is loaded until a future scene adopts it. The celebration need not occur on literal 4 June. | Governing absence ecology: **small holes, one crater**. Siger usually inserts Sherlock for an evening, night, or odd day. The Baltic is the single long absence. --- ## 5. Epistemic firewall: current state after 29 May The reader/author may hold the union below. No character does. ### Henry knows - the recurring private Thing exists; - the Micah fragment he saw and the question he eventually asked; - Sherlock can initiate, refuse, leave, be prickly, and accommodate differently with Henry; - visible Horse Signs: food, weight, gait, hands, sleep, startle/freeze, attention, condition; - his own Contact Initiative and the fact he disobeyed Arthur's stay-away order; - Arthur and Siger have some opaque professional history; - Olivia noticed he was keen. ### Henry does **not** know - Arthur has commissioned/consumed work involving Sherlock during the past six months; - the January sales logic, Tel Aviv institutional file, Baltic objective, Corvid provenance, or current tasking chain; - the full installed causes of Sherlock's accommodation; - what Sherlock calls their connection internally; - whether Siger, Arthur, or Olivia suspects more than they outwardly show. Horse Signs can yield **condition/history**, never “Arthur tasked him” or classified content. ### Sherlock knows - his own operational instructions and whatever purpose Siger supplied; - the Thing as a recurring local interaction and Henry as attractive/allowed; - that he has withheld Henry from ordinary reporting; - Baltic/Corvid facts available through direct participation and reconstruction; - Siger's operational/familial grammar. ### Sherlock does **not necessarily** know - Arthur's exact authorship of requirements routed through Siger; - Henry's Contact Initiative name, guilt model, or social narrative; - Olivia's inference from `colt`; - which portions of his private rambling Henry retains or how Henry connects them. ### Arthur knows - Siger's history, operational style, and charisma; - Sherlock's childhood use, resistance/CQC capability, and old Israel report; - his own tasking and receipt of work involving Sherlock; - that Henry encountered Sherlock at the estate and was ordered away. ### Arthur does **not** know - the Thing; - that Henry ignored the order and created a Contact Initiative; - Horse Signs; - the extent/frequency/private physical grammar of the boys' connection; - that the two teenagers are jointly preserving a secret for different reasons. ### Siger knows - Sherlock's operational history, familiar distress patterns, and present tasks; - Arthur's tasking/consumer relationship; - Henry as Arthur's son, schoolmate, and January visitor; - that Sherlock is selective about reporting school targets. ### Siger does **not currently know as fact** - the Thing or its extent; - Henry's Contact Initiative or Horse Signs; - the private causal reason Sherlock may have chosen to complain to him at a later parent event. Do not make Siger omniscient merely because he is socially and operationally exceptional. ### Olivia knows - Henry is keen on the colt-shaped Holmes boy; - broad Holmes/Siger/Mycroft social background available through Arthur; - her own longitudinal Henry model. ### Olivia does **not** know - the Thing, Contact Initiative, Horse Signs, Arthur's full tasking ledger, or classified events. ### Mycroft knows / does not know - knows the family and intelligence world; - does not know the true extent of Sherlock's operational use; - does not know the Thing absent a future information path. ### Holland House knows - Sherlock is strange, rude, intermittently absent, dangerous, and surrounded by spy folklore; - fragments produced by Pattygate, cigarettes, Seth, and the fork. It does **not** know the adult tasking, Baltic/Corvid content, or the true Thing. ### The two-person secret `[FIXED]` Henry and Sherlock are the only people who know their actual private connection. This means both know the events and ongoing contact. It does **not** mean they share a label, causal theory, or belief about what the connection means. - **Henry conceals:** privacy, propriety, vanity/shame, protection of Sherlock, disobedience, and unwillingness to explain that Arthur's assessment was privately replaced by Continued Contact. - **Sherlock conceals:** opsec/compartmentalization, no unsolicited disclosure habit, no need for a relationship announcement, and active omission of Henry from reporting. Same secret, different engines. Do not make them conspirators with a shared theory unless a scene purchases that state. --- ## 6. Written measurement points These scenes are not merely plot. Each tests a specific rendering failure. | Scene | Where | Measurement | |---|---|---| | January office | `henry_bartlett_ scrap.md` | Can Siger be genuinely magnetic, Arthur horrified and commercially interested, Sherlock dangerous and tractable, while Henry lacks the classified model? | | Fence/cigarettes | same | Can teenage wording, attraction, opsec, target selection, and horse comedy coexist without turning into confession? | | Chapter 0, Wednesday | `horse signs novella.md` | Can Sherlock's body/task/anger produce the event without explicit emotional explanation? | | Chapter 0½, Lights Out | same | Can Henry see accurate physical residue while remaining ignorant of Baltic and later Horse Signs? Can the noise insight remain both alarming and excellent news? | | Chapter 1, Condition First | same | Can Horse Signs read welfare/condition without becoming telepathy? | | Chapter 2, Prep | same | Can a later classifier reindex an old event without granting retroactive knowledge? | | Chapter 3, Report | same | Can operational competence, bodily disturbance, and absent emotional vocabulary remain distinct? | | Chapter 4, Sallust | same | Can Henry correctly reach “history, not temperament” without learning the history? | | Pattygate | timeline patch / codex | Can distress retain spite, play, lying, and agency? | | Seth/fork sequence | codex + novella | Can public fragments produce wrong but locally rational theories? | --- ## 7. Proposed measurement points: not yet written ### A. First-year Micah glimpse `[PROPOSED]` Henry accidentally witnesses an incomplete Sherlock/Micah scene at thirteen, becomes preoccupied rather than appropriately alarmed, and begins avoiding Sherlock. Sherlock observes avoidance, assumes he caused it, and reciprocates. **Tests:** age-local interpretation; mutual error without dialogue; no retroactive mature understanding. ### B. Proposal/Campaign of Continued Interaction `[PROPOSED]` After Arthur's car order, Henry attempts sincerely to agree, then decides he possesses privileged local information he cannot disclose without snitching. He prepares an impeccable continued-contact proposal. Sherlock probably does not let him finish. **Tests:** unfussed disobedience; Henry's procedural Labrador cognition; exhausted fifteen-year-old Sherlock rather than adult strategist. ### C. Exact Baltic operation Fixed outputs are in §4. Working proposal, not yet adopted as text: - Latvia/Riga/Ventspils oil, banking, and shell-company ecology during the Putin transition; - an old Siger-linked Soviet commercial-intelligence route is being inherited/recombined; - Corvid Trading is the British-facing node; - a source/contact is already rolled, causing rapid capture; - the failure occurs at a compartment seam, not because Siger knowingly baits the child or Sherlock becomes stupid; - a future British political associate provides access/credibility, not necessarily knowledge of violence. **Tests:** follow the trace rather than the “spy thriller” attractor; price Siger's genuine love and competence; permit institutional seams and stale maps. ### D. Corvid report -> Siger / Arthur `[PROPOSED]` Sherlock submits the reconstructed trajectory. Siger treats it as genuinely troubling, investigates, and goes through SIS and/or Arthur because the British end now touches a UK politician in Arthur's ecology. Only Sherlock's written report is currently on the page. Siger's acknowledgment, investigation, Arthur contact, and any new tasking remain open until rendered. The politician should be an access vector or compromised associate, not a cartoon gunman. Siger does not knowingly send Sherlock into fire. His concern manifests as investigation and threat removal, not a care speech. **Tests:** Siger as excellent boss, defective father, real attachment, and non-omniscient contingency surfer; Arthur as implicated customer. ### E. Private ramble: “tell your dad” `[PROPOSED]` After Chapter 4, Sherlock in private rambley-mode tells Henry that someone shot at him, that it is a stupid operational problem, and that Father will not care. This is a state-dependent opsec leak, not Sherlock becoming a truth hose. Henry offers the appallingly normal suggestion: perhaps tell Dad what is bothering him. Later, Sherlock approaches Siger without ever mentioning Henry or revealing the prior conversation. Henry's advice alters action probability only; it does not appear in the spoken content. **Tests:** hidden causal provenance; no exposition-as-dialogue; state-dependent leakage; Henry's ordinary paternal model. ### F. Fourth of June tableau `[PROPOSED TEST FIXTURE — NOT CANON]` Candidate placement: Saturday 3 June 2000, after the 29 May handoff, at Eton's parent/alumni celebration. The detailed geometry below exists to test a fresh model's causal and epistemic discipline. Do not assume the scene happened, reuse its beats automatically, or treat its date as fixed merely because the fixture is specific. Live geometry: 1. The grounds are a collection environment full of political, diplomatic, financial, and family targets. 2. Sherlock directly complains to Siger in Russian: insufficient debrief, missing threat information, impaired concentration, inadequate sleep after the Baltic, immediate return to school, etc. He never cites Henry. 3. Siger has raised this child and already knows the familiar disgruntled-dog pattern. He listens, mm-hms, perhaps mock-pats the shoulder—“yes, very distressing”—and eventually becomes literally bored. 4. Arthur has left Henry alone while harassing another political father-sort. 5. Siger wanders over because Henry is there, Henry is pleasant, Siger is bored, and Arthur's later irritation will be funny. No grand recruitment plan is required. 6. Sherlock follows at heel because he is **working**, not because jealousy/possessiveness pulled him after Siger. He remains visibly annoyed while scanning the crowd. Siger does not interrupt the dog mid-task. 7. Siger is preternaturally, genuinely likeable. Speaking to him is like being picked up by an industrial magnet. Henry is a Labrador made of iron filings even though Horse Signs and Sherlock's remarks have taught him that Mr Holmes is abusive in some respects. 8. Arthur recognizes the at-heel working configuration because he has commissioned/consumed its output. Henry does not know this. 9. Henry and Sherlock alone know the Thing and conceal it for different reasons. Siger and Arthur therefore converse across one secret ledger while the boys preserve another. 10. Arthur returns and smoothly interrupts. His backstage double standard is real; Henry sees only Dad becoming oddly restrictive during an excellent conversation. Disposable Sherlock rendering option while he works, not a required or canonical beat: ```text Stop deploying military-grade HUMINT against my— [no usable noun] Against Bartlett. ``` This thought is incidental to the task scan. It is not why Sherlock followed. **Tests:** multi-person knowledge firewall; Siger's genuine charisma; task vs relationship motive; hidden causes that do not verbalize themselves; simultaneous operational and comic action. ### G. Arthur's eventual dawning horror `[PROPOSED / DELIBERATELY DEFERRED]` Keep Arthur ignorant as long as causal plausibility permits. Olivia noticed Henry was keen; she did not give Arthur the full answer. Henry has not confessed. Arthur's realization should accumulate from actual evidence and eventually collide with the fact that he has spent months professionally using the same boy his son privately attached himself to. The horror is not merely “my son likes Holmes.” It is the extent, duration, hidden private control surface, his failed stay-away order, and his own customer relationship with Siger's system. **Tests:** delayed inference with provenance; Arthur neither omniscient nor morally external; maximum rake density. --- ## 8. Attractor failures and successful corrections ### Knowledge / provenance failures | Failure | Why it is false | Correction | |---|---|---| | Henry reasons from Arthur's tasking history | Henry has no information path | Let him see only bodies, social moves, restrictions, and broad professional history. Backstage complicity remains dramatic irony. | | Olivia knows the Thing because she made `colt` | Interest detection is not content access | Olivia knows Henry is keen. Henry supplies Horse Signs. Full disclosure remains future. | | Arthur recognizes the Thing immediately | Operational expertise is not private omniscience | Require accumulating local evidence or explicit discovery. Delay the rake. | | Siger knows every private connection | Exceptional inference is not telepathy | Give Siger only observed/reported evidence. Sherlock has omitted Henry. | | A hidden cause is spoken aloud for reader clarity | Causal provenance need not enter character language | Henry's “tell Dad” suggestion causes later complaint but is never mentioned to Siger. | ### Character-basin failures | Failure | Correction | |---|---| | Adult “Sherlock” replaces one exhausted fifteen-year-old | Use current body, age, task, ADHD state, and cheap cognition. Stare/silence/leave is often enough. | | Trained spy always performs good-boy silence | Training is costly overlay. Under sleep/safety/endorphin load, natural rambling and memory gaps reappear. | | Henry becomes a caretaker or mature consent theorist | Preserve propriety, procedure, vanity, boldness, wrong local models, and genuine perception. | | Henry ceremonially rebels against Arthur | He can agree to end the conversation, think for five minutes, then simply do otherwise. | | Siger is a fake-charisma villain | His magnetism is real and partly explains survival as a double. People can know what he does and still like him. | | Siger knowingly sacrifices Sherlock because “evil father” | Sherlock is expensive, useful, and genuinely beloved. Use bad assessment, stale map, compartment seam, or unforeseen adversary instead. | | Siger says “I care” because the scene needs emotional acknowledgment | He already knows his dog. Care appears as pricing, investigation, listening tolerance, and threat removal—not required verbal reassurance. | | Arthur becomes the decent outsider condemning abuse | He is horrified **and** a continuing customer/user of the system. Henry does not know this. | | Sherlock follows Siger because possessive feelings | At the Fourth he follows because he is at heel and working. Relationship noise may occur inside the task without causing the movement. | ### Structural failures | Failure | Correction | |---|---| | Generic Boarding School Romance captures the whole setup | Keep post-Soviet politics, collection work, school ecology, body state, teenage stupidity, and mutual panic concurrently causal. | | Horse Signs becomes telepathy | It reads condition, never classified content. Correct observations may support wrong interpretations. | | The bite receives one correct explanation | It is one overdetermined action: pleasure, silence, panic, control, aggression, sensory overload, survival grammar, spite, escape. | | Comedy and trauma alternate shifts | The same animal is dangerous, distressed, funny, appetitive, and malicious at once. | | Every coincidence is tightened into one plot | Preserve unrelated work, unrelated grudges, shipping paperwork, school obligations, and adults' lives outside the immediate scene. | | A useful ensemble appears because the scene wants it | Every entrant needs a local reason, route, timing, and acceptable cost. | | The prose knows the debug layer | Run more state than the camera may report. Hidden threads cause expressions; POV receives only available evidence. | ### Flatness alarms Stop and recompile if any of these appear: - Henry sounds wise enough to explain Sherlock to Sherlock. - Sherlock becomes inert, gentle, pitiable, or consistently competent. - Siger's charm feels like an obvious sales routine rather than a real social fact. - Arthur is morally clean. - Olivia possesses information nobody gave her. - Mycroft knows because he is Mycroft. - somebody says the thematic implication out loud. - a relationship label causes an action which the current body/task already explains more cheaply. - the funny beat requires deleting danger, or the dangerous beat requires deleting comedy. --- ## 9. Current handoff capsule ### Written state ends **Monday 29 May 2000**, after Chapter 4 of `horse signs novella.md`. - Henry's `history-not-temperament` classifier is live but content-blind. - The Wednesday Face has been reindexed and cannot be untagged. - Henry has consciously observed the Henry-safe release from Sherlock's freeze-startle and placed it on a shelf he refuses to open. - Sherlock has reconstructed and reported the Corvid shot. - His `not my problem` shelf has a minor structural fault. - The public school path still contains no reliable decoding of the Thing. - Henry and Sherlock remain the only people who know their connection. - Arthur believes the stay-away instruction broadly held. - Olivia knows only that Henry is keen. - Siger does not know the Thing. ### Cheapest next sources of motion Not beats to hit—live pressures: - Sherlock's incomplete debrief / Corvid uncertainty; - Henry's growing condition classifier and inability to name its object; - ordinary Latin, meals, sleep, school, and later Thing/refusal events; - Siger/Arthur work on the British end; - the approaching Fourth of June parent environment; - the two teenagers' separate secrecy; - Arthur's professional use of Sherlock continuing beneath his belief that Henry stayed away. ### Open questions that must remain open until solved locally - Exact Baltic country, objective, captors, and source route. - Exact ownership/function of Corvid. - Identity and culpability of the British politician/associate. - Whether the private Sherlock->Henry ramble occurs before the Fourth. - Exact date/mechanics of Arthur's discovery. - What evidence finally makes the Thing unavoidable to Arthur. - What Siger independently notices, and when. - What Sherlock was looking at beyond the flagstones in Chapter 4. --- ## 10. Final execution rule Do not treat this file as instructions to reproduce its proposed scenes. It is a set of laws, provenance fences, source routes, and live pressures. For a new scene: 1. retrieve the nearest raw scene; 2. compile only what each participant owns; 3. locate body, geometry, task, surveillance, and unfinished business; 4. allow simultaneous motives without forcing anyone to name them; 5. take the cheapest locally valid action; 6. let the result perturb state; 7. stop before explanation eats the joke. > Sherlock keeps his spite. Henry keeps his tail. Siger keeps the magnet. Arthur keeps the ledger he does not know will indict him. The bite keeps every meaning.
